U.S. premiere of Carlotta Ikeda in "Waiting"
Presented by the UCI Chancellor's Distinguished Fellows Series

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 at 8:00 PM

(Pre-performance Orientation by Professor Susan Klein, Department of East Asian Languages, one hour before the performance)

Carlotta Ikeda is one of the world’s most celebrated performers of Butoh – a contemporary avant-garde dance form which originated in Japan. Ms. Ikeda has performed over thirty cities on four continents, including the major cultural capitals of Paris, London, Vienna, Copenhagen, Brussels, Tokyo, Sao Paolo, Moscow, as well as the Avignon and Marseille Theatre Festivals. In 1974 she founded the first all-female butoh company, Ariadone, which is based in Bourdeaux, France. For this, her first American performance ever, Ikeda will dance her acclaimed solo entitled “Waiting.”

“Child, old man, insane witch, broken doll, Ikeda steps beyond time. [Carlotta’s] dance of multiple metamorphoses delves into the very source of life’s mystery and paints the dancer’s fears with the poetry of beauty."
-Le Monde
