In this introductory butoh workshop we will use yoga as a touchstone,
as we explore the forms, images, and impulses drawn primarily from the
teachings of elzza's late mentor doranne crable (herself a student of
Kasuo Ohno).
Soft focused eyes and attention to breath bring awareness inside, to
the internal landscapes. By separating from one's physical and social
identity, we become vessels for the dance. The use of imagery informs
movement, and we find that the dance (not the mind) moves our bodies,
allowing our bodies to speak for themselves, revealing a greater
authenticity and intention.
"If you wish to dance a flower, you can mime it and it will be
everyone's flower, banal, and uninteresting; but if you place the
beauty of that flower and the emotions which are evoked by it into
your dead body, then the flower you create will be true and unique and
the audience will be moved." K. Ohno
elzza's lifelong dance journey brought her to butoh in 1998 while
attending The Evergreen State College. There she studied with Andrew
Forshee and doranne crable. From there, she moved to the East Bay in
'01 to participate in a butoh and suzuki theatre technique intensive
with Shinichi Iova-Koga. Since then she has continued her studies with
Koga, as well as Leigh Evans, Yuko Kaseki, Minako Seki (in Berlin),
and release technique with Tanya Calamoneri. Elzza has also trained in
Jujitsu, Aikido, and Kendo. And practices pilates and yoga. -
