Hi all,
I'm planning on visiting SF in the beginning of Feb, and don't personally know of any Butoh groups/teachers there currently holding regular classes. Any suggestions? :)

    the same for myself...
    I'm going to live there!

I'll look for some link I might have to give you...
But it would be nice to hear it from people out there.

    Hi - ,

I'm so sorry I haven't gotten back to you earlier. I put your email down the list of THINGS I MUST ATTEND TO IMMEDIATELY and then, I'm ashamed to say, I sort of forgot about it.

However, here's what I know about training in the Bay Area:

    - Sherwood Chin is teaching a Body Weather Laboratory workshop at ODC Dance Commons, 351 Shotwell Street, San Francisco (between 17th and 18th Streets) on Sundays from 3-6 pm. The class has been going for several weeks now but I'm told drop-ins are welcome. The drop-in fee is $20. You can go to www.odcschool.org or call 415-863-9830, ext 100 for further info. Body Weather was developed by Min Tanaka in Japan (an early dancer with Hijikata who split from him fairly early to do his own thing). It's very energetic and a good workout. Plus there are many other local butohists who take the class as well, so it's a great way to meet people.

    - Molly Barrons facilitates a Wednesday night training session in the Mission area of San Francisco from 6:30-9 pm but she doesn't do it every Wednesday. And it's a very small space. Best to contact her directly if you are interested in attending. Her email is mbarrons@sbcglobal.net. She does mostly the Tamano method with a few other exercises thrown in.

    - and then, of course, there's always the source themselves: Hiroko and Koichi Tamano. Koichi was a principal dancer with Hijikata for many years, and Hiroko joined Hijikata's company soon after he began working with women. They do training sessions intermittently, but I just got an email from them saying they want to start up a sunrise butoh session from 7:30-8:30 am every morning starting April 1st. That is, if they can get enough interest. Let me know if you are interested, and I'll send along further info as it developes.

As for performances, I got your email three days after our last Bare Bones Butoh show. Too bad, but we will be doing another one in mid-May. I am performing one of my new pieces at 2nd Sundays on April 12 at 2 pm at CounterPulse, 1310 Mission St at 9th St. in San Francisco. It's free, but I think I will be the only Butoh performer there. It would be good to meet you, so I hope you can attend.

There's a place called the Temescal Art Center in Oakland that sometimes has butoh events. I don't have their address to hand, but I'm sure you could google them.

That's all I know about for now. If you wish, I'll certainly keep you on my mailing list for future events.

Yes, many of us are in love with Yuko.

    Be well,
    Bob
