Dance artist Christina Braun's collaborations with composers have been presented regularly since 2002, including the Thailand International Butoh Festival "New Generations" 2006, and the West Wave Dance Festival "World Forms" 2007. Christina has performed with Koichi and Hiroko Tamano's Harupin-Ha since 1998, and Mary Sano and her Duncan Dancers since 1997. Christina enjoyed choreographing the 2007 Woman's Will production of Mac Wellman's play Antigone. In 2008, Christina co-founded BUTOH SanFrancisco to foster the growth of the Bay Area butoh artist and audience communities. SF Butoh LAB is Christina’s project, whose mission is to promote peace through art exchange by producing new dance performances, symposia and workshops. In her creativity and performance trainings, Christina gratefully acknowledges the direct sourcing of specific exercises and concepts. Influential master teachers include Akiko Motofuji, Yoshito and Kazue Ohno, Akira Kasai, Yumiko Yoshioka, Hiroko Tamano and Katsura Kan.

Practice with Christina Braun celebrating the 50th birthday of the butoh body.
Can embracing the butoh aesthetic enliven our daily life and our performance energy? This experiment is open to all levels of movers. Dance makers of any form may especially appreciate this class. Bring a favorite movement to share.
We begin with floor and moving barre warm-ups. Feet and faces get special attention. Weird walks follow. We jump for our breath together. Novel movements are explored utilizing butoh-fu, the poetry of butoh. Transform into something other. Collaboratively improvise and witness. Stretch and breathe slowly.

Deborah Butler/Kitsune leads: May 2, June 20 & 27, July 11, 18 and other dates including most 3rd Saturdays in 2009.

Deborah Butler has been a butoh practitioner for 15 years. She apprenticed with the late doranne crable (Kagami) from 1994-1999 in Olympia, WA. After moving to Boston in 1999, Deborah continued her studies with Akira Kasai, Maureen Fleming, Katsura Kan, and Diego Pinon. Deborah began teaching in 1997 with Art & Revolution and has since taught workshops and performed at The Evergreen State College, Rhode Island School of Design, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and throughout the Boston Metro area, most notably the Somerville ArtBeat Festival. In 2002, Deborah was invited to showcase her solo, lilies & terrors, at the San Francisco Butoh Festival Finale and formed Kitsunebutoh, a collaborative laboratory based company. From 2006-2007, Deborah curated the Boston Butoh Series. Deborah frequently performs at San Francisco’s Bare Bones Butoh. Currently a graduate student in the Somatic Psychology program at the California Institute of Integral Studies, Deborah’s research explores the intersection of Somatics, Phenomenology and Butoh.

Deborah’s Class:
My approach to teaching explores closely the direct experience of embodying a butoh body through oscillation of experience and reflection: writing, witnessing, individual and partner work are core components. We will move from image, impulse and improvisation. What is the experience of the senses as we move with our breath? What is it to “see” with our whole body? As we access the wisdom of our cells, muscles, bones, fluids and breathe, how does our experience of space shift? My classes are designed for all bodies and levels of experience and aim to provide a safe holding space for fresh perspectives to emerge.

Iu-Hui leads: May 16 & 30 August 1 & 29, Sept, 5and other dates including most 1st Saturdays, 2009.

Iu-Hui Chua studied at UC Irvine’s dance department, later graduating from UC Santa Cruz with a Race and Ethnic Relations Sociology degree. She has performed as a company member with Anna Halprin, Salt Farm, Labayan Dance, and Theaterworks. Her own work has been presented at ODC’s Summerfest, the National Asian American Dance Performances Festival, KSW’s APAture, Mills College, Bare Bones Butoh, San Francisco Art Institute, and Yugen Presents. Her belief in the importance of bringing free and interactive performance to the San Francisco community has engaged her in performing site-specific works throughout the city. Her work is highly influenced by training with Anna Halprin, Karen Williamson, Akira Kasai, Ledoh, Enrico Labayen, Alonzo King and Robert Moses. She is co-founder and co-director of the performance group Nature Theater of Oklahoma as well as founder and artistic director of the Raw Egg Collective.
