I am saddened to inform you of the news of my mentor's passing: doranne crable, founder and artistic director of Kagami Butoh in Olympia, WA passed on July 12th. She was faculty at The Evergreen State College for 25 years in Performance Studies. I first met doranne in 1993 and began studying butoh with her in 1994. She formed Kagami Butoh that same year and I was fortunate to perform with her many times up until 1999. doranne studied with Kazuo Ohno in Japan and was heavily influenced by her studies with him. She always dedicated her work to him and adored him with great love. I remember, after I moved to Boston, I went to NYC to see Kazuo Ohno perform (1999) at the Japan Society. I was in a shop in the Lower East Side and I heard a voice behind me that brought me to a wide eyed halt. doranne's voice - unique, deep, charasmatic, unforgettable. She had flown out from Olympia to see her mentor. I'll never forget what she said to me (in that voice!): "deborah, there is a heart string connecting us tonight, from ohno-san, through me, to you, my dear." She loved to teach, she loved butoh, was at times impossible to deal with (and I say that with great love and respect), was unbelievably supportive, commanded respect and was an amazing and hypnotic dancer. I always thought I'd see her again, that I would dance with her again. . . .rest in peace dear doranne and thank you, thank you for all that you have given in your very unique and inspiring life. You will be dearly missed.
Please, if you were a student or admirer of doranne, please feel free to write your thoughts and memories here. I wish I had photos of her (she was so damn stubborn about media and documentation!) so if anyone out there has images to post, please do so (pf her or of Kagami) - please share. Also, if you have any information on a memorial for her, please share that as well.

Re: In Loving Memory: doranne crable - founder, artistic director Kagami Butoh, Olympia, WA
Mon, July 16, 2007 - 9:06 PMi began my study of butoh at evergreen in '98, not w/ dorranne but w/ a student of hers, andrew for(i can't remember how to spell it), as she was on sebatical that year. i met her the following year just before i took sometime off from school to travel, and began my studies w/ her when i returned in the spring.
she had an incredibly formidable presence, intense and rather intimidating in a way. so grounded, and spiritual
i have never met another teacher or dancer who put as much intention and ritual into the preparation for performance. which is something i found deeply important and have tried to maintain as best i could while involved in performance with others of different training who chatter away while applying the white makeup that undoes your human individual, and creates the empty vessel for the dance
no one else i've met ever does the little ritual of grounding and connecting your vital strings w/ another dancer... in fact it's been a long time since i'd thought about it.
my final year at evergreen i did an independant contract w/ dorranne to choreograph, design costume and soundscape, and perform a series of dances in various locations around olympia; the japanese garden in the morning, the middle of red sqaure(on campus) at mid day, and an indoor show upstairs in oly world news in the evening.
all of her contractees would meet together w/ her once a week at traditions cafe to discuss the progress of our individual projects. which was itself a unique way of handling indiviual contracts, and wonderful to have many other students to get and give feedback, and even subtley influence each others' creative processes.
she urged me to attend the seattle butoh festival that year, and participate in workshops. my experiences there opened up my world. and ultimately led me to move to the bay area to study w/ shinichi koga, whom i had met there.
actually it was the news of her passing that caused me to log onto tribe, in hopes of finding more of her students in the bay area
i remember after a few of us had some shakey experiences performing out in the crowds on campus at super satuday, she told us a story of how she once touched a man gently while dancing in public, and he was so freaked out that he punched her, and of another time she and some dancers were hauled out of the mall for performing...
in that light i want to give a guerilla butoh show to her memory, perhaps several. and would like to invite others to join me. to play w/ all the old forms she taught. "hanging bodies", "hungry ghost", "baby in the light", "old dog", etc -

Tue, July 17, 2007 - 7:05 AMElzza,
It is so wonderful and so beautiful for me to hear of your recollections - doranne's process of performance and the ritual involved in that is something so dear to me and so foundational. I am so happy to hear how this too has impressed you. And the strings! That is one of the most beautiful exercises I have ever learned. Thank you so much for sharing. I am moving to SF in August and it would be lovely to connect with you. I too am remembering doranne's plethora of images like old dog, baby in the light, boy on the shore, egg, walking down the roof. . . . I still have my very first notes from the very first Kagami performance in Red Square in April 1995 (Heart of the Rose) and some VHS footage of that done by Justin Wright (another student of doranne's) - it would be great to share that sometime. Andrew too was part of Kagami at this time. . .
Please do stay in touch!
My heart is with you as one student of doranne's to another. Namaste. -

Re: In Loving Memory: doranne crable - founder, artistic director Kagami Butoh, Olympia, WA
Tue, August 7, 2007 - 9:14 PMGod, I was just thinking of Doranne today and wondering if she was doing any local performances, so I Googled her name and found out this sad news. I wasn't prepared for this -- I had hoped to have a few more deep conversations with Doranne in this lifetime, especially since I didn't understand some of what she had said to me when I was twenty-one. I, too, performed in the "Heart of the Rose" on Red Square in 1995, and still have my lantern. I remember my feet being so cold that I wasn't sure how I was going to make it through the performance, and then eventually the coldness didn't matter anymore, it was just such an experience to be out there moving in the twilight. At the end of it, we did a farewell gesture to the audience, of touching our hearts and releasing rose petals from our palms, and Doranne afterward said to me that she watched me in that moment "and it was lovely." That gravelly voice of hers. It affected me because I really did give something of myself in that moment, and she so quickly recognized it. So, it just makes me cry that someone who recognizes an experience like that has passed. She was a strange and brightly-colored spirit, a true artist, a memorable teacher, a human being in grace, and it's a terrible loss that she's gone so soon. May she dance always in our memory.

Tue, August 7, 2007 - 9:18 PMOther forms I remember -- drunken man? or was it drunken kite?
Do you really have a VHS copy of the Heart of the Rose? I would love to talk and see if I can get a copy of that -- would certainly pay for any inconvenience in getting a copy!

Re: In Loving Memory: doranne crable - founder, artistic director Kagami Butoh, Olympia, WA
Wed, August 15, 2007 - 5:30 AMCorrection: In some of my posts I've been referring to one of doranne's pieces that I performed in as "Heart of the Rose" when in fact I have meant "Doorkeeper of the Heart". My apologies for any confusion. "Doorkeeper of the Heart" was performed on Red Square in April of 1995 and was Kagami's first performance under doranne crable.

Re: In Loving Memory: doranne crable - founder, artistic director Kagami Butoh, Olympia, WA
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 2:26 PMI, too was a student of Doranne's around 96-97. I found out about her passing soon after it had happened as I still live in Olympia, and still know several dancers who were in close contact with her. It was quite a shock to hear the news. It still is strange to think of her not in this world. I know that what she has taught me through her teachings of butoh will last me a lifetime. It was something that I recognized, something familiar, and she was the one who made that very plain to see. Even though I haven't danced in almost two years, I can still close my eyes and go to that place, and dance in my internal landscape.
Thank you Kitsune for making this post. Doranne touched many, many people in very deep ways. I have heard there will be a memorial for her sometime this fall, but have not heard of any date yet. I will make sure and post something here when I find out. -

Re: In Loving Memory: doranne crable - founder, artistic director Kagami Butoh, Olympia, WA
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 7:35 PMThank you Matthew for your post and for keeping in touch about a memorial. I would like to make time to come to Olympia for that. I've been thinking of doranne almost daily since I began school as what I am learning resonates so much with what doranne was teaching - Jungian psychology, archetypes, myth, symbology, authentic movement. . . - I've been meeting her teachings over and over and it has been so wonderful to feel her presence through her work once again.
Please do stay in touch and let us know if a memorial if/when you hear.
Peace and Blessings,
kitsune -

Re: In Loving Memory: doranne crable - founder, artistic director Kagami Butoh, Olympia, WA
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 11:11 AMHello again,
Below is a message of something happening here in Olympia to remember Doranne. I don't know if there will be anything else happening. It seems a special dancing commemeration would be lovely for all of us who learned to move with Butoh in our bodies.
Dear Friends of Doranne,
The following remembrance has been organized to honor Doranne's life. The Evergreen State College is sponsoring the film. Her sister Bettie is organizing and giving the reception on behalf of the family. She personally invites you and hopes you will be able to join us. The college sent out the following announcement.
Peace & Love,
Judith Gabriele
Please reserve the afternoon of Saturday, November 17, 2007 beginning at noon for the Olympia premiere of Gypsy Caravan (a film still in theatrical release). The film will be shown at Capitol Theater (206 5th Avenue S.E.), followed by a reception offered by her sister, Bettie Wuthrich, from 2:30-4:30 at the Heritage Room (604 Water Street, next to the Water Street Café).
The Evergreen community suffered a significant loss in July when Doranne Crable died. Her friends and relatives respect her wishes not to have a formal memorial on campus but also realize that our community needs to honor her passing and her life. We invite you to help celebrate Doranne's life by joining us for a screening of a very special film, Gypsy Caravan, which documents the music and spirit of a group of people from countries that Doranne had been to or planned to visit in her never-ending quest for new experiences and knowledge. The film's director had originally titled the film, When the road bends - tales of a gypsy caravan, that is derived from the Romani proverb about how to cope when life doesn't deal you a straight hand. Doranne had been looking forward to teaching in The Gypsy Road: A Study of the Roma this fall and was surrounded by books, music, and images as she prepared for her class during her treatments for lung cancer. Her love of dance, song, a passionate story, and a good laugh will be felt again as we watch this film together. -

Re: In Loving Memory: doranne crable - founder, artistic director Kagami Butoh, Olympia, WA
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 2:01 PMMatthew,
Thank you for sharing this news.
I learned of Doranne's passing YESTERDAY
and I am shocked, amazed, in wonderment of her.
She provided a powerful channel for me to express myself
through Butoh; she was a guide who guided me to
guide myself. I am planning major collaborative art events
with music, visual art, poetry(powertree)
www.abztraktsynergy.blogspot.com
join my tribe:
abztraktsynergycollective
I must honor and celebrate my great teacher Doranne
in anyway allways.
All of her students have a responsibility to rise up and
stand for what we believe in.
I want to reveal her lifestory
I would write her biography if the family would allow it.
We all have much to learn from the life she chose.
Most would mourn in black.
I cannot.
I will mourn and celebrate in shining white
a blank canvas to dance this life until the darkness takes me.
Peace-
Doranne I cherish your memory
and swear to do your teachings honor~~~~~~
